MORNING GLEANINGS
Luke 24:45 “He
opened their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures”
The two men on the way
to Emmaus were discussing about the Lord’s crucifixion and the ‘rumour’ of
His resurrection. These men, although heard that the Lord had risen, did not
believe it. The Lord wanted to remove their doubt and thus He walked with
them and expounded the things mentioned about Him in the Scriptures. When
their eyes were opened they recognized Him. So exited were they that they
went all the way back to Jerusalem and told the eleven disciples about the Lord’s
resurrection.
The Lord, before His
death, had repeatedly told His disciples that He would be killed and that He
would resurrect on the third day. However, in spite of the testimonies of
the women and these two men, the cloud of doubt did not vanish from them. Thus
the Lord appeared to these disciples and not only did He reveal Himself, but
also “He opened their understanding that they might understand the
Scriptures.”
The Psalmist who penned
the beautiful verse, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my
path” (Ps. 119:105) pleads to the Lord 5 times in the same Psalm, “give
me understanding” (vv. 34, 73, 125, 144 & 169).
When the Lord opened
their understanding the very cowardice disciples turned out to be so brave
and stepped into the battlefield, and they were later called as “men who
turned the world upside down”. With a view to do greater things for our
Lord, let us pray at the dawn of 2010, “Lord give us understanding that we
might understand thy Scriptures.”
